Monthly Archives: December 2010

I am really looking forward to tonight for  a third guided tour [details at the bottom of this post] of a new art space I have encountered recently.  These are my impressions from several visits, and I have added my very amateur photos to Helen’s Flickr stream.

I continue to be impressed by the talent and imagination of artists in Second Life and enthused by the experience of being surrounded and immersed in art.  I had already experienced the quality of the work of eros Boa and Matteus Taurog in an  Immersiva Tour, so I knew that I would not be disappointed by the ‘PopArtDisplay’ project in which they are involved.

Matteus guides us

The gallery is on 10 levels.  The landing point is at the top (level 1), and you gradually work your way down the floors.  Helen say she sometimes gets overwhelmed by size, and worries that she might ‘miss’ some important works.  But somehow, these designers have come up with a layout which is very clear .. you just instinctively know how to walk through and experience everything.  And I really felt the same sense of ‘size’ which Helen described when she visited MOMA (Museum of Modern Art) in New York a couple of years ago.  Incredible.

When I visited on my own, I spent a long time just looking at the pictures, and enjoyed the fun bit of getting into the pictures, becoming the main protagonist.  I could either do this as myself, or I could click on a box and ‘wear’ the clothes or shape of someone else.  At Helen’s school, the art teachers sometimes get he pupils to ‘act’ out cameos featured in paintings they study, and somehow this really brings things ‘to life’.  Helen would not have dared to have done this at the MOMA!

Karelia meets Warhol

I have already attended two superb guided visits, enhanced by enjoying the quality and tone of Matteus’ lovely Italian voice and his precise content  (OK, I don’t understand every word, but I get the ‘gist’, I just love the language, and, as observed by Gwen, there does not seem to be a wasted word)  and the company of friends whom I ‘TP-ed’!  I hope that tonght someone else gets asked to make a comment at the end of the tour .. I was a bit embarrassed at my feeble attempt to contribute something when asked to by Matteus!  But I wasn’t made to feel stupid, which is good!

Marilyn dances

The evening finished with a dance in PopArt surroundings.  I copied Gwen, put on my Marilyn Monroe outfit and danced in a globe.  (Not the most flattering profile!).

‘Mission statement’ from the PopArtDisplay group (Founder Eros Boa):

What we wanted to create is not simply a showcase for POP  Art works, but rather a scene where they can be staged: a perception of art that is deep, involving and entertaining as we are confident this is the best way to appreciate art in SL. Many works are reproduced in3D; they appear as cinematic settings recreated in every single detail and allow the avatar to enter the work and, as an actor in it, to achieve a completely new view of the work itself.

Catch The Flag! ImperiuM vs Sessou!

Wow!  What an exciting experience I had last night!  I was quite simply terrified by the prospect of my first Interclan ‘Capture the Flag’ contest with another clan organised for the ‘learners’.  Yes, our trainers Cait, Ratt, Pill and H all told us to have fun and enjoy it …. but I still felt I didn’t want to let people down!

I arrived early enough in the lovely arena beautifully crafted by Ratt for a little team talk, and, as usual, I felt totally comfortable asking what probably seemed stupid questions.  (Like, where are we fighting?) Everyone fights until the flag bearer of one of the teams dies … so the basic aim is to (a) protect your team member who is carrying your flag, and (b) kill the flag bearer of the other team before they kill yours. (And to help reduce lag, you reduce your settings … so apologies for photos which are less bright than usual!)

The feeling as we waited in the ‘wings’ reminded me exactly of how Helen felt when she was 13 and waiting to walk on the school stage behind heavy curtains.  Churning stomach, trembling a little, wondering why I had actually chosen to do this when I could be relaxing on the sofa in front of the tele watching ‘Mock the week’.  Thanks to our captain Matt who gave calm, clear and reassuring directions (I was assigned to help ‘protect the flag’), and to Lari who distracted delightfully through random comments, gestures and even jokes on demand (-he was even relaxed enough to fight AND watch Mock the Week …), I was able to survive until the word was given by Cait ‘after three: .. one …. Two … three .. GO!)

I tried to do my ‘bit’ to slash our Flag bearers’ attackers (though it was not easy .. they looked such nice people, and one was a sweet little furry fox) .. team members forged ahead and focussed on the flag bearer of the other team… and after each of the five bouts, we received encouraging words from our superiors!

We pride ourselves on being very hospitable and respectful to other clans, but I think we are allowed to feel happy when we win!  (Which we did, this time, 4:1!)

We posed for a group photo (expertly taken, processed and rezzed within 5 minutes by Cait!)  and I enjoyed watching some new gestures and animations from the Sessou clan, all of whom accepted my friendship, which was very kind considering the amount of blood which had been spilt!

To end off the evening, our trainers challenged us to a fight.   At this point, my keyboard went on strike, so sadly I could not have the heroic end I would have wished (at least I could blame the keyboard!) .. but I was at least able to capture a photo of Fushia, ImperiuM’s resident artist.  Doesn’t she look great?!

Finally, thanks to the ImperiuM owners (Ratt Cait and Pil) who arranged all this for us.  We all really really appreciate the efforts they make to make the C:SI experience exciting and fun.   I (sort of) look forward to the ‘away’ match.  I wonder whether the nerves ever go away?!  It probably just wouldn’t be as exciting if they did!  Watch this space to see if I make it!

PS Cait beat me to it (quelle surprise!) and has written a post on her brilliant blog here. What a technological inspiration she is!

Happy Birthday, Dear Crow Bar, Happy Birthday 2 You

Chilling at the crow bar

My absolute favourite haunt for music and off-beat, random humour, is C&L’s ‘Crow Bar’. As it gets ready to celebrate its second birthday this evening, I thought I’d write a little tribute post to its owners and regulars, fully expecting to get serious backlash over being such a creepy, goody-goody. This is, after all, the role I assume at the Crow Bar, where my innocent, positive and pink demeanour rather stands out against the backcloth of knowing, cynical and dark humour!

So …

Karelia looks up to Lyndy

Thank you Lyndy .. you are so generous in the time you give to make sure that there is always a welcome for everyone at the bar .. . you have a real gift for witty repartee .. … you are calm and measured in times of stress (like when I didn’t have any music at the start of a party, and you just sorted everything out and instructed me to be calm) .. you are the perfect reliable and trusty ‘listener’ (I cannot help but confide in you!) .. and you continue to accept me, even though I have habits which irritate you intensley .. (like saying ‘sorry’ all the time!). Quite simply the best ‘hostess’ in the whole of SL (and you’ll probably kill me for saying this).

Karelia looks up to Clive (a bit)

Thank you Clive … I’m just amazed that I have survived this long on your friends list, knowing your antipathy for things pink. I used to change my hair or wear a hat, but now I boldy continue to flout my pinkness, and you continue to tolerate me. I was so grateful for all the time you spent sorting out my internet radio and channels, and I love the spinning globe you gave me. May you enjoy many more years and gadgets in SL!

Karelia admires Ooj from a distance

Lyndy and Clive do great DJ-ing, but thanks also to the other regular DJs who produce such great play lists … Shell & Ronni (great, loud sets!) …Oojali (such an enigmatic, distant yet compelling man!) … Doc Bunyip (a real eye opener to folk music) … Kev (such a sweet man!) .. June (a great international mix and a very talented artist) .. and the rest!

And thanks to the regulars who entertain me with their comments .. amongst them, Socrates (the wise good-looking blond who introduced me to the club in the first place and did GREAT DJ-ing at a language event)

Hope, the Queen of Dances

..… Hope (who generously shares her dances via the huddles hud!)  …Blowie (my long lost brother .. so proud to be your big sis!) … Bozo (introduced me to some great dances ..) … Fabilène (my style guru and great French friend) … Duke & Ivanava (thanks for giving me a glimpse into the amazing dragon world!) Gia & Eddy, Fawn & Don (thanks for inviting me to your weddings!) …Lophius & Verena (thanks for the German poetry!) Dubble, John, Penfold and Brevis (great to see you at the start of this evening!)

Off to party now … watch this space for a birthday photo!
