A Groovy Kind of Love – Musica in Classe – Tuesday 24th July 2012

Please come along to listen to or participate in an English pronunciation class at Italian Mood, this Tuesday 24th July, 2130 Italian time , 2030 UK time (but NB you do not have to be Italian or English .. all nationalities welcomed!)

In the excitement of last week’s after-party, we did not really decide on a song for this week, so I hope that you will indulge the teacher and the translator and let us choose one for this week! It’s another real favourite for me: ‘A Groovy Kind of Love’. Loris has done lots of research on this one, and below are some links for those of you who wish to be ‘at the top of the class’ … [I will be asking questions and awarding prizes, of-course!] Please come ready to feel ‘groovy’and , who knows, we may even manage a dance ball to allow us to gently swing as we sing in our (thankfully) inimitable style at the end.

(7) The absolute original version (you’ll like this!) – Muzio Clementi – Sonatina op. 36 n. 5 in sol maggiore (parte 2) – 3. Rondò

(8) A modern-day Mozart prodigy playing the above:

Here are the English lyrics:
When I’m feeling blue, all I have to do
Is take a look at you, then I’m not so blue
When you’re close to me, I can feel your heart beat
I can hear you breathing in my ear

Wouldn’t you agree, baby you and me, we’ve got a groovy kind of love

Any time you want to, you can turn me on to
Anything you want to, any time at all
When I kiss your lips, ooh I start to shiver
Can’t control the quivering inside

Wouldn’t you agree, baby you and me, we’ve got a groovy kind of love, oho

(Solo) Oh,

When I’m feeling blue, all I have to do
Is take a look at you, then I’m not so blue
When I’m in your arms, nothing seems to matter
My whole world could shatter, I don’t care

Wouldn’t you agree, baby you and me, we’ve got a groovy kind of love
We’ve got a groovy kind of love, we’ve got a groovy kind of love
Oho, we’ve got a groovy kind of love

Here are the Italian lyrics (not the same as the English ones!)

a cantar canzoni a cantar canzoni

Penny Lane – The Beatles – Musica in Classe, Tuesday 17th July

By popular demand, (and especially popular with Rick!) we’re back to The Beatles this week …. so get ready to sing ‘Penny Lane’ at Italian Mood, with our striking hostess Marjorie Fargis and resident translator Loris Talon on Tuesday 17th July, 8.30 pm UK time, 9.30 pm Italian time, 12.30 SL time!  I confess to being confused about which key to use!  The sheet music I have  is in B flat major (modulating to A flat major for the middle section); my guitar book has it in G major (modulating to A major); but when I listen to it, it is definitely B major (modulating to A major).  So I will go with the advice of Ultimate Guitar tabs and play it in B major by putting the capo on the second fret and playing it in A major!  Here’s a link to this version.

I love this video which features The Beatles themselves and Liverpool! (I lived in Liverpool when I was 11 years old and LOVED it … perhaps I will attempt a Liverpudlian accent at some point in the evening!)

.. and here is a version with the lyrics on the screen:

(and by the way, I have just subscribed to this channel .. loads of Beatles songs uploaded with lyrics!)

Here are the words:

Penny Lane there is a barber showing photographs

Of every head he’s had the pleasure to have known

And all the people that come and go

Stop and say hello

On the corner is a banker with a motorcar

The little children laugh at him behind his back

And the banker never wears a mac

In the pouring rain…  Very strange

Penny Lane is in my ears and in my eyes

There beneath the blue suburban skies  I sit, and meanwhile back   In Penny Lane there is a fireman with an hourglass

And in his pocket is a portrait of the Queen.

He likes to keep his fire engine clean

It’s a clean machine

Trumpet Solo

Penny Lane is in my ears and in my eyes

Four of fish and finger pies

In summer, meanwhile back

Behind the shelter in the middle of a roundabout

A pretty nurse is selling poppies from a tray

And though she feels as if she’s in a play

She is anyway

Penny Lane the barber shaves another customer

We see the banker sitting waiting for a trim

Then the fireman rushes in  From the pouring rain…  Very strange

Penny Lane is in my ears and in my eyes

There beneath the blue suburban skies  I sit, and meanwhile back

Penny Lane is in my ears and in my eyes

There beneath the blue suburban skies…

Penny Lane.

Tears in Heaven, Eric Clapton – Musica in Classe, Tuesday 3rd July 2012

I love this song by Eric Clapton and look forward to singing it. I cannot possibly do justice to the acoustic guitar accompaniment, but will try my best to play the chords!

Would you know my name If I saw you in heaven?
Would it be the same If I saw you in heaven?
I must be strong and carry on
‘Cause I know I don’t belong here in heaven
Would you hold my hand If I saw you in heaven?
Would you help me stand If I saw you in heaven?
I’ll find my way through night and day
‘Cause I know I just can’t stay here in heaven
Time can bring you down, time can bend your knees
Time can break your heart, have you begging please, begging please
[Instrumental]
Beyond the door there’s peace I’m sure
And I know there’ll be no more tears in heaven
Would you know my name If I saw you in heaven?
Would you feel the same If I saw you in heaven?
I must be strong and carry on
‘Cause I know I don’t belong here in heaven
‘Cause I know I don’t belong here in heaven
