The Boxer – Tuesday 28th August 2012 – Musica in Classe

Italian Mood, Second Life (IM me for a TP if you get lost!)

Lezioni di inglese su testi di canzoni famose Lesson n. 23 – Simon & Garfunkel The Boxer

I am so pleased that we are doing this song. It is from the wonderful album ‘Bridge over Troubled Water’. It has a beautiful melody and harmony in 3rds .. such a pity that Second Life will not allow us to do the harmonisation!

I look forward to seeing anyone who can come along .. no dress code, but you may like to reflect the theme in some way. (I shall be looking for some cuts and bruises …. however, I may leave off the boxing gloves, as they may affect the guitar playing ..)

Warning: I cannot sing in their register, so will be playing in C major with a capo on at least the third fret! (Thank heavens for capos. Or should that be capi?!)

Link to YouTube video:
– the ‘original’ version which I used to listen to over and over again when I was young …. (I just love the crash after the ‘lie la lie’!)

I like the latest comment from a Youtube subscriber:
If this song was my ringtone….I would never answer my phone

[Although, as your self-appointed English teacher, I feel bound to point out the grammatical error. Strictly speaking it should read ‘If this song were my ring tone’. Long live the subjunctive!]

English text and Italian translation: (Thanks yet again to Loris for the care he takes over this work .. I am learning a great deal of Italian through this activity!

I am just a poor boy.
Though my story’s seldom told,
I have squandered my resistance
For a pocketful of mumbles, such are promises

All lies and jest
Still, a man hears what he wants to hear,
And disregards the rest.
Mm mmmmmmm
M mm m m mmmm mmmmmmmmmmm
Tutte bugie e beffa
Mm mmmmmmm
M mm m m mmmm mmmmmmmmmmm

When I left my home and my family,
I was no more than a boy
In the company of strangers
In the quiet of a railway station running scared,

Laying low, seeking out the poorer quarters
Where the ragged people go,
Looking for the places only they would know

(tchooo)
Lie la lie la lie la lie
Lie la lie …. (tchooo)
Lie la lie la la la la lie
La la la la lie
Lai la lai

Asking only workman’s wages
I come looking for a job
But I get no offers,
Just a come-on from the whores on Seventh Avenue.

I do declare, there were times when I was so lonesome
I took some comfort there
Ooo la la la la la la ….
Ammetto, c’erano momenti che ero così solo
Là ho trovato conforto.
Ooo la la la la la la ….

Then I’m laying out my winter clothes
And wishing I was gone,
Going home
Allora sistemavo I vestiti invernali
E desideravo di essere andato via.
Di andare a casa.

Where the New York City winters aren’t bleeding me,
Leading me, going home

In the clearing stands a boxer,
And a fighter by his trade,
And he carries the reminders
Of ev’ry glove that laid him down

Or cut him till he cried out
In his anger and his shame
“I am leaving, I am leaving.”
But the fighter still remains.
O ferito fino a farlo gridare
Dalla rabbia e vergogna
“Me ne vado, me ne vado”
Ma il lottatore rimane, ancora.

Lie la lie …. (tchooo)
Lie la lie la lie la lie
Lie la lie …. (tchooo)
Lie la lie la la la la lie
La la la la lie
Lai la lai
