Italian Mood, Second Life (IM me for a TP if you get lost!)

I just LOVE this music:

Here are the words, kindly translated my Loris:

Viva la Vida

Coldplay

I used to rule the world,
Seas would rise when I gave the word.
Now in the morning I sweep alone,
Sweep the streets I used to own.

I used to roll the dice,
Feel the fear in my enemy’s eyes.
Listen as the crowd would sing:
“Now the old king is dead! Long live the king!”

Ero solito tirare i dadi,
Sentire la paura negli occhi dei nemici.
Ascoltare come la folla cantava
“Adesso il vecchio re è morto! Lunga vita al re!”

One minute I held the key,
Next the walls were closed on me
And I discovered that my castles stand
Upon pillars of salt, pillars of sand

I hear Jerusalem bells are ringing.
Roman cavalry choirs are singing:
“Be my mirror, my sword and shield
My missionaries in a foreign field.”

For some reason I can’t explain,
Once you go there was never,
Never an honest word;
That was when I ruled the world

Per qualche ragione che non so spiegare,
Quando vai non c’è mai,
Mai una parola onesta;
Questo era quando dominavo il mondo

It was a wicked and wild wind
Blew down the doors to let me in.
Shattered windows and sound of drums;
People couldn’t believe what I’d become.

Era un vento malvagio e selvaggio
Abbatteva le porte per lasciarmi entrare.
Finestre infrante e suono di tamburi;

Revolutionaries wait
For my head on a silver plate,
Just a puppet on a lonely string.
Oh who would ever want to be king?

I rivoluzionari aspettano

I hear Jerusalem bells are ringing.
Roman cavalry choirs are singing:
“Be my mirror, my sword and shield,
My missionaries in a foreign field.”

For some reason I can’t explain
I know St Peter won’t call my name.
Never an honest word,
But that was when I ruled the world.

For some reason I can’t explain
I know St Peter won’t call my name.
Never an honest word,
But that was when I ruled the world.

Italian Mood, Second Life (IM me for a TP if you get lost!)

I’ve just come back from a lovely week in New York, so this week’s song just *has* to be Sting’s ‘An Englishman in New York’. I look forward to seeing my ‘regulars’ and also to welcoming some visitors from an SL MOOC who want to see what we get up to, led by my dear friend Doris Molero aka Pionia Destiny!

Feel free to bring any objects or clothes to demonstrate the song. Loris has kindly translated the song into Italian below to help us.

Here’s the ‘official’ YouTube video:

And here’s a version with the words and a lovely accompanying video:

Thanks to Loris for these words:

MIC 65 – Englishman in New York

Sting

I don’t drink coffee I take tea my dear
I like my toast done on one side
And you can hear it in my accent when I talk
I’m an Englishman in New York

See me walking down Fifth Avenue
A walking cane here at my side
I take it everywhere I walk
I’m an Englishman in New York

I’m an alien I’m a legal alien
I’m an Englishman in New York
I’m an alien I’m a legal alien
I’m an Englishman in New York
Sono un forestiero non un immigrato clandestino
Sono un Inglese a New York
Sono un forestiero non un immigrato clandestino
Sono un Inglese a New York

If, “Manners maketh man” as someone said
Then he’s the hero of the day
It takes a man to suffer ignorance and smile
Be yourself no matter what they say

I’m an alien I’m a legal alien
I’m an Englishman in New York
I’m an alien I’m a legal alien
I’m an Englishman in New York
Sono un forestiero non un immigrato clandestino
Sono un Inglese a New York
Sono un forestiero non un immigrato clandestino
Sono un Inglese a New York

Modesty, propriety can lead to notoriety
You could end up as the only one
Gentleness, sobriety are rare in this society
At night a candle’s brighter than the sun
Modestia, correttezza possono condurre alla notorietà
Potresti finire come l’unico

Takes more than combat gear to make a man
Takes more than a license for a gun
Confront your enemies, avoid them when you can
A gentleman will walk but never run

If, “Manners maketh man” as someone said
Then he’s the hero of the day
It takes a man to suffer ignorance and smile
Be yourself no matter what they say

I’m an alien I’m a legal alien
I’m an Englishman in New York
I’m an alien I’m a legal alien
I’m an Englishman in New York
Sono un forestiero non un immigrato clandestino
Sono un Inglese a New York
Sono un forestiero non un immigrato clandestino
Sono un Inglese a New York

Italian Mood, Second Life (IM me for a TP if you get lost!)

I am sitting / In the morning
At the diner / On the corner
I am waiting / At the counter
For the man / To pour the coffee
Siedo / Al mattino
Al bar / All’angolo
Aspetto / Al bancone
Che il barista / Mi versi il caffè

And he fills it / Only halfway
And before / I even argue
He is looking / Out the window
At somebody / Coming in
Qualcuno / Che sta entrando

“It is always / Nice to see you”
Says the man / Behind the counter
To the woman / Who has come in
She is shaking / Her umbrella
“È sempre / bello vederti”
Dice l’uomo / dietro il bancone
Alla donna / Che è entrata
Lei scrolla / L’ombrello

And I look / The other way
As they are kissing / Their hellos
And I’m pretending / Not to see them
And Instead / I pour the milk
E guardo / Da un’altra parte
Quando si baciano / Per salutarsi
E faccio finta / Di non vederli
E invece / Mi verso il latte

I open / Up the paper
There’s a story / Of an actor
Who had died / While he was drinking
It was no one / I had heard of
Apro / Il giornale

And I’m turning / To the horoscope
And looking / For the funnies
When I’m feeling / Someone watching me
And so / I raise my head
E giro le pagine / Fino all’oroscopo
E cerco / I fumetti
Quando sento / Che qualcuno mi osserva
E allora / Alzo la testa

There’s a woman / On the outside
Looking inside / Does she see me?
No she does not / Really see me
Cause she sees / Her own reflection
C’è una donna / Di fuori
Che guarda dentro / Mi vede?
No lei non / Mi vede in realtà
Perchè vede / Se stessa riflessa

And I’m trying / Not to notice
That she’s hitching / Up her skirt
And while she’s / Straightening her stockings
Her hair / Has gotten wet
E provo / A non notare
Che si sta tirando / Su la gonna
E mentre lei si / Raddrizza le calze
I suoi capelli / Sono tutti bagnati

Oh, this rain / It will continue
Through the morning / As I’m listening
To the bells / Of the cathedral
I am thinking / Of your voice…
Oh, questa pioggia / Continuerà
Tutto il mattino / Mentre ascolto
Le campane / Della cattedrale
Penso / Alla tua voce…

And of the midnight picnic / Once upon a time
Before the rain began…
And I finish up my coffee
And It’s time to catch the train
E al picnic di mezzanotte / Quella volta
Prima che cominciasse a piovere…
E finisco il mio caffè
Ed è ora di prendere il treno

Calliope has come up with this week’s suggestion: a short song with absolutely delicious chords! Come dressed for stormy weather and ready to do a very British thing: talk about the weather!

Italian Mood, Second Life (IM me for a TP if you get lost!)

A slow romantic song you will all know, covered by many singers, featured in the film ‘Ghost’, and with very easy chords.

Here’s a link to a video, followed by a translation by the Great Loris Talon! I apologise in advance that I will not be able to achieve the dramatic effect of soaring strings and rhythmic brass accompaniment in the Righteous Brothers’ version ,so I may try to be closer to the intensely personal version by Harry Belafonte, which brings tears to my eyes.

Oh, my love, my darling
I’ve hungered for your touch
A long, lonely time
Oh, amore mio, mio tesoro
Ho desiderato ardentemente un tuo tocco
Per un tempo lungo e solitario

Time goes by so slowly
And time can do so much
Are you still mine?
Il tempo passa così lentamente
E il tempo può fare così tanto
Sei ancora mia?

I need your love
I need your love
God speed your love to me!
Ho bisogno del tuo amore
Ho bisogno del tuo amore
Dio aiuti il tuo amore per me!

Lonely rivers flow
To the sea, to the sea
To the open arms of the sea
Fiumi solitari scorrono
Verso il mare, verso il mare
Verso le braccia aperte del mare

Lonely rivers sigh
“Wait for me, wait for me”
I’ll be coming home, wait for me!
Fiumi solitari sospirano
“Aspettami, aspettami”
Tornerò a casa, aspettami!

Oh, my love, my darling
I’ve hungered for your touch
A long, lonely time
Oh, amore mio, mio tesoro
Ho desiderato ardentemente un tuo tocco
Per un lungo tempo e solitario

Time goes by so slowly
And time can do so much
Are you still mine?
Il tempo passa così lentamente
E il tempo può fare così tanto
Sei ancora mia?

I need your love
I need your love
God speed your love to me!
Ho bisogno del tuo amore
Ho bisogno del tuo amore
Dio aiuti il tuo amore per me!

Lonely mountain gaze,
At the stars, at the stars
Waiting for the dawn of the day
Montagne solitarie guardano,
Le stelle, le stelle
Aspettando l’alba del giorno

All alone I gaze
At the stars, at the stars
Dreaming of my love far away
Tutto solo guardo
Le stelle, le stelle
Sognando il mio amore lontano

Oh, my love, my darling
I’ve hungered for your touch
A long, lonely time
Oh, amore mio, mio tesoro
Ho desiderato ardentemente un tuo tocco
Per un lungo tempo e solitario

Time goes by so slowly
And time can do so much
Are you still mine?
Il tempo passa così lentamente
E il tempo può fare così tanto
Sei ancora mia?

I need your love
I need your love
God speed your love to me!
Ho bisogno del tuo amore
Ho bisogno del tuo amore
Dio aiuti il tuo amore per me!

If you could read my mind | Gordon Lightfoot | Musica in Classe | Tuesday 10th September 2013

Italian Mood, Second Life (IM me for a TP if you get lost!)

Thanks to Lyndy Enoch, joint-owner and fantastic DJ at my ‘regular’ SL haunt ‘The Crow Bar’, for including this beautiful, poignant song written by Gordon Lightfoot about the break up of his first marriage. Fairly easy chords and meaningful words make it an obvious choice for our ‘Musica in Classe’ on Tuesday. Come prepared to sob your heart out as we read the verses aloud to improve our English – whether because you are moved by the song or distressed by the way we ruin it …!!! (I have splashed out and bought a box of tissues for us all… aren’t I generous?!)

If You Could Read My Mind, ©1969 by Gordon Lightfoot

If you could read my mind, love,
What a tale my thoughts could tell.
Just like an old time movie,
‘Bout a ghost from a wishing well.
In a castle dark or a fortress strong,
With chains upon my feet.
You know that ghost is me.
And I will never be set free
As long as I’m a ghost that you can’t see.

If I could read your mind, love,
What a tale your thoughts could tell.
Just like a paperback novel,
The kind the drugstores sell.
Then you reached the part where the heartaches come,
The hero would be me.
But heroes often fail,
And you won’t read that book again
Because the ending’s just too hard to take!

I’d walk away like a movie star
Who gets burned in a three way script.
Enter number two:
A movie queen to play the scene
Of bringing all the good things out in me.
But for now, love, let’s be real;
I never thought I could feel this way
And I’ve got to say that I just don’t get it.
I don’t know where we went wrong,
But the feeling’s gone
And I just can’t get it back.

If you could read my mind, love,
What a tale my thoughts could tell.
Just like an old time movie,
‘Bout a ghost from a wishing well.
In a castle dark or a fortress strong.
With chains upon my feet.
But stories always end,
And if you read between the lines,
You’d know that I’m just tryin’ to understand
The feelin’s that you lack.
I never thought I could feel this way
And I’ve got to say that I just don’t get it.
I don’t know where we went wrong,
But the feelin’s gone
And I just can’t get it back!
